A note from Misty

Dear Reader,

As I sat down to write this email, I caught myself doing it… the gripping.

You know the gripping? When you are sitting at your computer and happen to notice that your shoulders have slowly risen to earlobe level? Or while washing the dishes you notice your jaw clenched a little tighter than usual? Or maybe while staring at your phone for too long, you feel the furrow in your brow and the tension in your neck?

The gripping is caused by that tension and anxious energy that builds up in our bodies, and as it goes unnoticed for hours, days, or even years, it makes our body physically react. We curl up, we hunch, we tense, we grip. Then one day, we notice the gripping and we tell ourselves to just let it go, only to have it return an hour later.

Often the wellness and therapy industries talk about letting go, but they tend to focus on letting go of the big things outside of our control. Like letting go of a toxic relationship, a floundering friendship, a bad habit, or a job that no longer aligns with you. Those massive leaps only happen a handful of times in a whole life. If you are waiting for a "Big Let Go" to finally feel good, you are missing out on life right now.

The way to feel good on a day to day basis, starting today? Start practicing micro-releases as you move through your day. It’s letting go of the clenched jaw when you are frustrated. It’s softening the shoulders when you have been at your desk for too long (and maybe getting up and taking a break, yeah?). It's softening your thoughts when you feel agitated. This practice is the one that matters, because if you can't let go of the physical grip in your body right now, you will struggle to feel good no matter what your outside circumstances may be.

Practice With Me

So, how do we actually practice the micro-release?

Trying to think our way out of tension will only work for so long...it is like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. To truly let go, we need to invite the nervous system to settle and let the body melt.

I created a gentle somatic and restorative yoga practice to help guide you through this exact release. It’s a floor based practice designed to help you release the grip and soften.

Retreat With Me

This softening, learning how to notice the grip and clear the tension out of our muscle memory before it takes over our day, is half the foundation of everything we are doing at the Soften & Savor Retreat at the end of this month.

Before we can truly savor our lives, we have to remember how to soften.

I have five mats left for this retreat. If you want to spend the day practicing softening and savoring alongside a community of like minded women, I’d love to have you join us.

Soften & Savor - a Summer Solstice Retreat

For the rest of the week, see if you can catch yourself. When the shoulders creep up, just let them drop.

Stay Soft,

Misty

P.S. If you struggle to un-clench during the day, I have been working on an audio project to help you out. It is a 7 track meditation mixtape designed to carry you from dawn to after dark. Next time, I am going to give you one track for free so you can hear what I have been working on!

Tune out the noise. Tune back into yourself.

Twice a month, I'll send you a note inspired by a new monthly Frequency, with practices, reflections, and reminders to help you slow down, listen inward, and live a life that feels like you. Each month's Frequency is an invitation to remember an aspect of ourselves we may have forgotten, like trust, adventure, presence, pleasure, or rest, and bring a little more of it into our everyday lives.
